How direct selling compensation plans work

A compensation plan is the rulebook for how you get paid. Most pay in four ways, and only one of them doesn't depend on anyone else. Here's each stream, a worked example, and where the traps are.

Key takeaways

  • Most plans pay in four streams: retail margin, performance bonus, team commission and rank rewards.
  • Only retail margin is fully in your control. The rest depends on volume, rules and other people.
  • Read the official plan document and check what it takes to qualify each month.

How do direct selling compensation plans work?

Direct selling compensation plans pay sellers in two main ways: a retail margin on products they sell, and commissions or bonuses based on sales volume, measured in points, across the team they sponsored. Plan types such as binary, unilevel and matrix differ in how a team is structured and which sales count.

The four income streams

Margins come from the price list. For how points feed streams 2 to 4, see PV and BV explained.

A month in an invented plan

Imagine a plan with a 25% retail margin, a 3% performance bonus above ₹10,000 of personal sales, and a 5% commission on team volume.

Illustrative month (not any company)
LineWorkingAmount (₹)
Retail margin₹20,000 sales × 25%5,000
Performance bonus₹20,000 × 3% (above ₹10,000 threshold)600
Team commission3 active members × ₹8,000 = ₹24,000 × 5%1,200
Gross earnings6,800

Net for the month6,000

Where the gross ₹6,800 came from

74% of this invented month comes from your own retail sales.

Retail margin ₹5,000 Performance bonus ₹600 Team commission ₹1,200 Retail margin ₹5,000 Bonus ₹600Team ₹1,200

The retail margin is the part you can see, plan and measure. Everything else needs a team or a threshold. That's why how direct sellers actually earn starts with customers.

Five things to check in any plan

  1. The monthly qualification. What volume must you buy or sell to keep earning?
  2. Which sales count. Customer sales only, or also your own and your team's stock purchases?
  3. How deep it pays. Levels or generations, and at what rank.
  4. What resets. Do points and ranks reset every month?
  5. What the company reports. The income disclosure shows what people really earn.

If rewards come mainly from recruiting rather than from sales, read the pyramid scheme tests.

Frequently asked questions

How do direct sellers get paid?

Typically from a retail margin on products they sell, performance bonuses on their own sales volume, commissions on the volume of the team they sponsored, and rewards for reaching ranks. The mix and rules depend entirely on the company's plan document.

Where can I find the official compensation plan?

On the company's own website or in its seller agreement. Don't rely on a team's slides, which often simplify or exaggerate. Ask for the official document.

Can I earn without recruiting anyone?

In most plans you can earn a retail margin and sometimes personal performance bonuses without a team. Team commissions and higher ranks usually need a team. Check which bonuses need one.
